With 5G Mobile Vehicle, Docomo And Nissan To Test I2V Tech

Japanese automaker Nissan and telecommunications giant Docomo will use fifth-generation mobile communication in a moving vehicle to test I2V (Invisible-to-Visible) technology.

The technology was first introduced at CES 2019 in Las Vegas in January and is currently being tested at Nissan’s Grandrive test bench in Yokosuka, Japan.

The I2V system is Nissan Intelligent Mobility’s future technology that combines the real and virtual worlds by combining information from external and internal vehicle sensors with cloud data to identify what is further down the road, behind a building or just around the corner.

The technology also connects drivers and passengers with Metaverse, a virtual world where people can communicate through avatars. Family members, friends or other people in an external location can appear in the car in the form of three-dimensional (3D) or augmented reality avatars intended to offer help or business.

As part of the field test, companies use Docomo’s fast 5G mobile connectivity to send wireless avatar data to the test vehicle and the real-time vehicle camera views. The test vehicle is based on the Nissan NV350 caravan.

The partners will evaluate how the people in the car and those represented by the avatars feel through the user interfaces. The usability of interactive I2V communication functions will also be evaluated. Docomo and Nissan plan to continue research and field testing into I2V technology and applications and offer their customers new experiences of connected cars.

Spark, New Zealand carrier has initiated its first ever autonomous vehicle that 5G enabled in the country through an alliance with Ohmio Automotion.  The autonomous vehicle which was earlier tested on the Auckland’s streets at the Wynyard Quarter Innovation Precinct this week is integrated with the 5G network of Spark at its lab and can commute up to four passengers.
